Which custom field type to use for email address?

Having an email address field for Organizations was perfect for me. In the March 25 upgrade, this was eliminated. I would like to create a custom field for emails so I can continue structuring my data this way and reimport the moved email addresses to that field. But when I go to create a custom field, there doesn't seem to be a field type that matches an email address. I see Text, URL, Numerical, etc.

Does anyone know which of those field types can be used for an email address?

  • Text field would be your best option Josh.

  • Sadly none of them do the job well. Text is just that ... no mailto: link. URL assumes the URL is a web address so you always get http://.

    Frustrating!

  • Thank you, Peter! I was hoping there would be a more appropriate field, one that would actually turn it into a live link as Chris suggests.

And yes, Chris, frustrating! I know not everyone uses the system the same way and it can't please everyone, but having an email address associated with an organization, not just a person, should be a feature. I can think of numerous situations where this is not only necessary, but widely used in many industries. Many departments shift employees around or have several people cover a particular job (like newsrooms, shipping, ordering, HR, accounting, etc.) and need to keep the email address general and not associated with a particular person.

I tried to at least export the new notes that now contain all the email addresses so that I could import them back into a custom field, but it doesn't seem to be possible.

I'm going to suggest this feature be added back in the Ideas & Suggestions section if anyone wants to chime in.

  • There is reportedly an update coming "soon" that will enable custom email field with the features we are looking for. What a mess! :(
