Outlook - importing contacts with multiple categories

Outlook allows you to assign contacts to multiple categories; they seem to work like tags. I want to import contacts from Outlook, and I have multiple categories assigned to many of my contacts (and there's about 3,000 of them). I'm assuming the best thing to do is have these categories become "tags" in Insightly. In the csv export, if a contact has multiple categories (i.e., tags) these multiple categories are separated by semicolons Will that transfer to Insightly as multiple tags?

  • Hi Abby,

Yes you are correct  - categories are tags in Insightly (for the purpose of importing). You will have to separate the categories into separate columns - importing contacts with tags. They cannot simply be separated by semicolons.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Abby,

Tags would work well for tracking your Outlook categories. You can import a tag list in a single column but they would need to be separated by commas not semicolons. I suggest doing a find and replace option to clean that portion of your data before import. When you import, it will give you the option of "Contact Tag List" or "Contact tag 1". Make sure you select Contact Tag List.
