Task dependance

Dear Users and Developers,

I would have a smaller yet useful suggestion regarding the Tasks function.

In our operation it often happens that some tasks cannot be completed unless another task is not completed.

I know that when stating progress, it can be selected to show "waiting on someone else", however, it would be nice if we could actually select the task itself.

For example, as a supervisor, I could see that Joe is still not finished uploading invoices that is why Karen cannot update this week's finances.

Otherwise, very useful and effective software, I am glad to use it - keep up the good work.

Regards,

Ivan

  • Was just thinking the same thing as Ivan! I second the motion.

  • Absolutely...task dependancies wound be great.

Also: If an activity set could also have a "conditions" or "user questions" that the user would answer to determine if it, and then all the dependant tasks applied - that would be hugely useful.

    ie.

    Task 1

    Task 2

Q: Is the customer paying Cash?

    OR

Conditon: IF Custom field A = "Yes" or If Custom Field B = "Some Value"

    THEN....

YES: Task 3,4,5 become applicable / active

Task 6,7,8 are auto set to completed / not applicable

    ELSE (NO)

Task 6,7,8 become applicable / active

    Task 3,4,5

are auto set to completed / not applicable

At present our activity sets tasks (Which are really checklists of things to do) include many items that are applicabale in some cases but not other (but the overall proccess is so similar that it does not jusify the creation of a whole new pipeline + activity sets).

  • I 3rd the motion - would be extremely useful in a software setup/training environment where I cannot move onto many other tasks within a set before others are completed.

  • Yes, please. Especially when multiple people are working on items in an activity set. Some people assigned a task can't even get started until prior tasks are completed, but they have to just keep checking to see if the previous task is done.

  • I am all for this feature. I have only started using Insightly (Free Trial currently) and looking to phase out similar software that does not meet my organisation's requirements.

I am able to create tasks and link them to projects / people / organisations / etc. But the most crucial aspect of linkage is missing - tasks and task dependencies  - (which may be a deal breaker for upgrading)

It is frustrating creating a task with a dependency that occurs cross-project and not being able to link or view that task with other tasks that it is dependent upon or are dependent upon it.

Any idea if this feature is in the pipeline and what the timeframe would be for it?

  • Furthermore, it would really activate the usefulness of Activity Sets.  Right now, without flexible changing due dates, there is a strong disincentive to use series of pre-firing tasks when at least one of those tasks (again, in a set) is delayed.

  • Thank you all for your feedback, we are looking to do an overhaul on the Tasks and your ideas are helpful!

  • Hi

Do you currently have task inter-dependencies functionality?

  • Hi Massi,

    Unfortunately, we don't.

  • This would be very helpful! Is this something that is on the road-map? If so, any estimation of when?

  • I agree. Identifying dependencies between tasks is critical.

  • Also for task dependencies, If i am waiting on someone else, I'd like to be able to show who and what I am waiting on.  For example If I have task 2, and you have task 1, it should have a way to indicate in my task, task 2, that I am waiting on task 1 to be completed, as well as, not show up in my list to do until the other person has completed it.  Or even better, segment the task list so at the top are tasks I am not waiting on anyone, and a second section below that shows tasks I could do if someone else does there part, that way, I can nudge them if necessary.

  • This would be good for activity sets, and another post seemed to suggest that it was already part of activity sets.

In the meantime, I'm thinking that if any tasks are dependent on other tasks, we could create a separate activity set and make that dependent on the outcome of the previous task, i.e. if "x" then add "y" activity set.

  • I know this is an old thread but did this get implemented, I is a core function of project management to have dependent activities and to see which have to be finished before you can continue.
I am in the process of choosing a mew CRM and this could be a deal breaker for me
