Custom Fields - Specifying them as Required

It would be very useful (in terms of maintaining data integrity) to be able to make Custom Fields required.

Most importantly for Contacts and Opportunities, but for all types of custom fields it would be great.

ie. Just add a "Required Field" checkbox on the custom field definition/change screen under the existing chekcboxes for:

  • Visible
  • User Editable

Hello everyone, last week we released completely revamped Insightly System Settings. New design allows administrators add powerful customization to their page layouts, configure new types of custom fields and much more.

Please head over to this article or watch this overview video to learn about all the new ways you can customize Insightly.

And...the wait is over: you can configure your fields as required, as read-only, hide them completely or hide them if no data is entered.

  • Thanks for submitting this idea, Mia.

  • In the same vein it would be great if custom fields could also be a checklist style form (http://www.java2s.com/Tutorial/CSharpImages/CheckBoxFormDemo.PNG)

  • Hi mia! We love that you're so passionate about your idea. :-)

We also love that you've been supporting other customers with your votes and comments. We just want to make you and everyone aware that when you post the same comment on multiple posts - especially posts that are unrelated to your request - it's considered spamming. :(  We ask our community members to follow our Insightly  community guidelines so we can make this community the best place for users to connect and share information. Thanks for your understanding!

  • Hi Brenda, no worries.

I genuinely think that this would potentially beneift every sinlge one of your clients. I could see no other way to at least make people aware of the suggestion - for them to then with their own free will - reject, not vote, comments that its a stupid idea and so on.

Can you suggest a better way to increase awareness than to post a suggestion and then just hope people at least see it, for consideraton?

As you can see votes are now coming in and providing you with feedback for what people want/need.

But I totally respect your point... I only posted the link (for this only) on a few other posts with wide audiences (likely to have many followers) and will remove the link to this post, from others.

    have a great day :)

  • Hi mia. Thanks for the reply. :) I really appreciate your understanding and willingness to remove the comments.

As for awareness -- there are a variety of ways customers can find your post -e.g. using the search bar, clicking on related posts that appear when you're creating a new post, using the drop down to sort by recent activity, votes or comments (btw: your post is the first customer post that shows up for recent activity).

However, because there are so many different ways a customer can refer to a feature, there's still a chance you'll never find their post. I've put in a feature request to Zendesk (the platform Insightly Support uses) to allow tagging in Community to help solve this issue. Hopefully it will get pushed through!

I remember at my old job, if someone submitted a request that needed votes they'd email our small group to go and vote! Maybe we should consider  "soapbox" time. Let me think about this one. If you have any ideas please feel free to pass them over! Thanks!

  • Not just custom fields but stock fields as well should allow us to specify what has to be filled in. I just spent 6 hours adding data so reports worked properly...

  • I second this - any update on required fields?  Seems like an easy add.

  • Hi Community!

The option to make Custom Fields required is not on our 2016 road map. We wish we could add all requested features; however you can be sure that we have some fantastic features planned for 2016.

  • Can we see what is on the roadmap for 2016?  Because this is a must need feature in my opinion especially if you want a CRM system to support an entire organization.

  • Hi Kate:

You can see what is currently on our road map by using the sort function at the top of Feature Requests page to see what is Planned.

Also, as more requests come in and get voted up by the Community these will be added for consideration and can be moved to Planning too.

  • Real pity this is not Planned as yet...man I would love this feature to be added, it would solve a lot of problems for us as we report in Qlikview a weekly update on pipeline activities and our sales team do miss some fields from time to time...

  • I need this in my life! It makes total sense for this to be enacted for the sake of continuity in reporting and use of filters.

I also see that by searching this help forum that it's regularly requested in various forms, so I feel like this issue has a lot more votes than what is seen on this thread.

  • Would be great if you can add this option to core fields as well

  • yes!  That would be perfect.  It is the only way to get your sales team to input the data you want every time.

  • Hi there! I would like to add my support for this feature. It's key for data integrity, search optimization, training and buy in. Right now, one of the most common complaints that I receive is that data searches are inaccurate - while we are training our employees on necessary fields, users can save the entry without filling out all necessary fields. I hope this can be prioritized for 2017 Q1!

  • Hi Nora (or Insightly Team).

Can you give us an update on the development plans/time-lines for this feature please!

  • Being able to specify which field(s) are required is a very basic function in a CRM. It should be easy to implement, too.

This definitely needs to be added. And, respectfully, not 'added to a future roadmap for 2017 or 2018... This could be done easily and quickly.

Edit: Forgot to add; I think this should extend for ALL fields, not just custom fields. I think we should be able to determine which fields are required or not!

  • What about roadmap 2017? is on there now? I could really benefit from this... Now I have to check regularly if a certain field is filled in for new contacts and if not, I have to stalk my colleagues to make them fill it in. I would love to see a different solution!

  • Jill: I'm just an Insightly customer, so I can't tell you if it's on the 2017 Roadmap, but I really, really think this feature should be part of Insightly.

Am I missing the setting and it's already there?

If not, shouldn't admins be able to decide which fields (custom fields or otherwise) are required? Like Jill, our internal Insightly champion feels like they have to 'stalk' and 'annoy' people on our team to fill out the fields they are supposed to. :(

  • Hi Ryan, good to know I'm not the only stalker :-). Our company only has a small team. I cannot begin to imagine what it would be like in large teams...

As far as I know there is no setting yet, or I'm missing it too. Hopefully someone of the insightly team can shed some light on this.

  • Hi all,

Thanks for supporting this request, I also voted in 2015. To me it's not possible to extend use of Insightly whithin all the organiztion due to this missing feature. I had enough of stalking my small team, cannot imagine to do it on larger scale.

See if in 2017 someone will follow up on this topic.

  • Any news about this feature? It is a CRM tool, I mean there are information that i really need the team to fill out, and without a required field it is very complicated to make them fill it.....

  • This would be extremely useful. The required attribute I manually type into my form does nothing apparently. Would be great if this was implemented into insightly already.

  • PLEASE! Required fields -- this is a feature whose time has come! I cannot begin to express how many times I have to chase down information that should have been filled in.
