Business card scan: OCR and top up

Hi

I's a pity that the transcription is done manually. I'd love to choose between that and OCR.

Aren't there plenty of online character recognition technologies to use yet? Like http://www.textkernel.com/ provides?

At least it would be nice to top up the number of cards per month independently from booked plan. Five is far to less if you're on a exhibition.

Why not 10 scans each for a Dollar via Paypal... it's done anyway via Amazon Mechanical Turk like service and should be scalable? Regards

  • Hi Holger. I asked Product to shed some light as to how they choose to go with our current process. They said that they actually studied and compared numerous companies that offered this service and the decision was made after speaking to Insightly users who said they valued quality over speediness. This is why after the scanned card details get transcribed from image to text we have real people verifying it for maximum accuracy. Hope that helps.

  • Ok. Thanks for the answer.

How can I top up my credits to scan more then 5 cards a month?

  • I definitely think giving the entire audience the choice would rock! As Holger said sometimes you are a smaller business and have times where there are 100s of cards to scan. From my experience with other tools provided the card is well designed, clean font, and the photo used is decent 90% of the time auto reader works fine. I have tested Cam Card and a few others, urge you to at least experiment with it.

  • Like others I find the current limits unacceptable.  Integration with an OCR would reduce the expense on your part and allow us to have a tool that is helpful.  Those of us who attend conferences and are exhibitors it is a critical requirement!

  • I hope there is some progress on this. I just advise customers who i know use Insightly to use camcard app and copy and paste, not great but when they have 100's of business cards a week its the only financially sane way to do things.

  • Hi

We have a number of users who do not meet customers face to face and so would not make use of their allocation.

It would be a nice touch if the account had an allocated monthly pool of scans available for all users.

Being able to purchase additional scans in batches of 10 for an appropriate cost would also be a useful touch.

Thanks for the constant improvements :)

  • I echo what everyone else has said here. It's clear that the pricing for this feature was not well thought out. It will cost my company several thousands of dollars out of pocket just for 3 folks who need to scan business cards at the trade shows they frequently visit. To add insult to injury: My sales guys receive at least 100 business cards per day at a tradeshow. Sometimes these tradeshows will go on for 3-4 days. Even at the enterprise level, I'm limited to 50 scans per month--totally unacceptable.

Aside from the tradeshows, in the normal scope of business, these same 3 sales people are constantly on the road and scanning business cards into insightly. Inside the office, I have 9 people who do not scan business cards as they do not deal directly with customers face to face. It's unfortunate that I have to upgrade all users to cover what only 3 will use--many of them will never scan a single business card.

Also, fast forward to our other two locations: I have 2 more locations of folks that I'd like to add to insightly which totals 30 employees--28 of which are internal employees who will never see a customer's business card. I'd like to add these folks to the lower paid tier of insightly, but there's no way that I can justify upping memberships for everyone. This seems crazy and unreasonable.

    Please help stop the madness!

  • Agreed! This needs to be solved quickly. How am I supposed to scan in business cards from tradeshows. The only solution now is to hand my business cards to my co-workers since I'm maxed out of scans and its not in the budget to have everyone upgrade.

  • I cannot explain to you how the lack of having this feature is a speed bump for our business. Our traveling employees need to have the ability to increase the amount of business card scans per month or else they won't use the software like the rest of us. Please add this ability asap!

  • Hi all. The ability to purchase additional business card scans above what your plan currently offers is definitely a consideration. We'll likely not know more until we're into the New Year. We'll update the community once we know something for sure. Thanks!

  • SalesForce and Sugar have nice integration with CamCard Business. I believe this option should be considered.

  • Hi Brenda,

Could we please get an update on this?

  • Hi everyone:

The option to purchase additional business card scans is still being considered. We'll update the community once we know something for sure. Thanks!

  • Another option is to piggy back on the functionality built into Evernote. Evernote does a good job of scanning business cards and you already allow import of Evernote notes. Why not used the parsed data in the note to create the contact in Insightly.

  • I'm amazed, shocked, and stunned that this very basic feature has still not been handled promptly.

With all due respect, it's insulting to see such general comments from insightly support that says "this is still being considered..." which in my mind, translates to mean that there's no firm plan to do anything about this problem.

I have 4 sales people on the road right now who cannot scan in more than a couple of business cards! This seems so silly!!

Insightly: you have something that works--all you need to do is increase the limit--please just try something small--even an extra 10-15 scans.

  • Very glad to see that many others think that Insightly needs to fix this.

In a desktop world the CSV file import model is fine.

In a mobile world it is hopelessly antiquated.  I want to shoot a photo of the contact, have it 90% accurate, fix it and start the lead.

I know this is a hard decision.......but wait this just in!

We live in a MOBILE WORLD.....(report circa 2007, iPhone released)

    Looking at calendar...yep 2016  =)

....here's what you need to do.

Allow for VCF/VCARD import at a MINIMUM, then we can use our own app.

Even better give the option of your own built in OCR or Manual transcription.

    OCR unlimited.

Manual you can keep the low limits as I won't use it and don't care.

Strategy session done, I won't send you a bill, just thank me when your market penetration doubles and you kick Salesforce to the curb.

  • Hi Everyone:

This is something we are looking into as mentioned above. And while we really want to add updates this feature as soon as possible, our resources and priorities can shift quickly. Due to existing projects and features already in development and this is something that has been pushed out for later in the year.

Please know that we are reading your comments even if we don't always respond. So thank you for continuing to share the importance of this for your business with us!

Disclaimer: Any unreleased Insightly features referenced here are not currently available and may not be delivered on time or at all. Please make your purchase decisions based upon features that are currently available.

  • Thanks for the update Lyla.  This is important and there are so many apps that do it well for so little you can see why it is a bit of a head scratcher for us that it wouldn't be sorted out already.  However, we all have 100 things we wish were done in our own jobs so we get it.  Thanks for telling us we are at least in the line.

  • Evernote seems to have solved the business card scanning problem.  Their OCR is quite good.  How about expanding Insightly integration with Evernote and just suck the content out of Evernote as a v-card or whatever.

  • It's been a year since this string started, and we've have seen several indications that you're "considering it", with no timetable except for later in the year.  Let us know when?

  • The Business Card Scanner is a really helpful tool. I hope, insightly can offer a solution in the near future. (we would also pay for an additional contingent of business card scans)

  • I would also be willing to pay extra per card. This would be a huge time saver and would greatly enhance my experience using this program.

  • Another vote for this. We'd consider paying a per card fee to be able to scan additional cards above our limit of 5/user. Also, what about allowing for the total number of users x 5 to be applied to the whole team.

(ie: our admin can use 20 scans for our team of 4. that seems fairer).

  • This is an incredibly helpful feature for our company. However, limiting it to 5 scans a month makes no logical sense. Certainly, any employee meets more than 5 customers per month. If they didn't--we'd all be out of business.

  • 5 cards a month is ridiculously low (I'm also surprised there is such a low limit for enterprise). I work for myself, alone and I still collect 20 cards a week, and sometimes a lot more.
