Ability to clone a project

I am finding it increasingly annoying to work with multiple projects that are basically the same projects on a monthly basis.

I understand there is the pipeline activities that can be added to automate this to a certain level, however i still need to go and create the project from scratch every time and when you have x20 of these on a monthly basis its very time consuming.

I would like to see something like Project Templates which is basically a project with a predefined set of activities and tasks, i can forsee this feature either working in a few ways.

  1. You can use the DUPLICATE project option so if you have an existing project you just want to use the same set of tasks for the same organization you can use this option and it will duplicate the the project with most predefined fields

  2. Click NEW PROJECT from TEMPLATE, select the template and then enter some unique information and it will create a project for you

  3. Even better i would like to see some sort of recurring project templates so that they automatically get provisioned on a certain time and date for a certain client with certain activities attached to it, this way i dont even have to create a project manually if i dont want to, i just log in in the morning and i see the work i need to achieve that day or that week.

Any of these above would be brilliant. :)

  • you can build activity sets into the pipeline.  it sounds to me that you just need to build multiple pipelines and then treat those pipelines like templates.  so when you create a project you just select the appropriate pipeline for that job and all the tasks are loaded.

  • Yeah i can do that, but i think the more annoying thing is that the way activity sets work and tasks is extremely cumbersome when you want to create 20 pipelines.

You need to watch how you name your activity sets so they make sense when you are creating your pipelines and you dont confuse the activity set with other similar ones.

Ive even had to go to the point of labeling them in the beginning of the activity set to make them easier to see which one i need to choose eg.

    01.WEB.Planning
    02.WEB.Rollout

Its becoming increasingly difficult to create and manage activity sets properly the way its working now.

  • Great suggestion Rich.

I was going to suggest the same to you Mitch but see how its not particularly working for you. Great feedback for our team with awesome details, its very helpful! :)

  • Please make it possible to copy a current project. Insightly Project Management is useless for me without that ability -- despite the pipeline/ activity set fixes. Thanks taking this into consideration!

  • I vote for it. Do you plan to implement feature "copy project"?

  • I agree.  This would be a very useful feature.  I am surprised it is not already here.

  • I agree with Mitch. it's a nightmare to re-create so many identical projects from scratch. It makes no sense. The code to do this takes no effort at all. This should be a no-brainer. I gave up on the project management and I'm moving to Asana until this gets fixed. Not a great solution, but I have no choice if I want to survive.

The template should be able to be used over and over. i should only have to plug in new dates and times (here's where tasks need to be able to have start and end times).

Automation would be nice, but if the above simple fixes are made, this will be a very nice system.

  • Hi Kevin:

We're sorry to see you go but understand that Insightly isn't for everyone. When making even seem like small changes other areas of our infrastructure can be affected and this is one of the considerations taken for feature requests.

An option that might work for some users would be to import Projects into Insightly.

  • Hi,

You can clone or duplicate an entire project now under the Actions menu when viewing an individual project. So you can setup a project as a template project, and then when you need to create a new project that is very similar, just clone that project and you're all set. Insightly can even clone files and notes attached to the project too.
