Shared Custom Fields between Contacts, Organizations, Opportunities and Projects

I've reviewed the multiple topics on my issue, but can't find a specific one that addresses it.  I created a dropdown custom field called, "Referral Source", that I've created in Contacts.  It contains about 15 sources so far.  I want to share that custom field with the Organizations module as well, but can't find where that capability exists.  Also, if this custom field doesn't convert over when I create an opportunity/project for this Contact, perhaps having this option would help solve that.

I'm hoping I just missed it.  Please advise and thank you for your help!

Hello everyone, I am happy to report that this request for improvement has been fulfilled.

As an administrator, you can configure mapping of lead's fields to Contacts, Orgs or Opportunities, and Opportunity's fields to Project fields. Thanks.

This articles walk you through that feature:

  • Hey Jerry!

Thank you for taking the time to post!

We don't currently have a method for carryover custom field information from one record type to another.

The option right now that I can suggest would be to re-create the custom fields you're looking to carryover in the new record type that you're looking to house them in.

I'm sorry we don't have a more fluid system for this, but I totally agree that it would be a useful addition!

    Have a great day!

  • Hi Jessica,

I have to agree with @Jerry Messick that the carryover functionality would be very useful and safe a lot of time on the users' end.

Is there anything planned to include this feature anytime soon?

Furthermore, is there a function to copy/ mirror a group of custom fields from e.g. opportunities to projects? Or do all custom fields have to be recreated individually?

    Thanks!
    Sebastian

  • Hi Sebastian, this is Lyla from Customer Support :)

This is not on our current road map at this time.

The Custom Fields are defined by each record type and would need to be created individually for your Opportunities and Projects.

  • I agree 100% with Jerry - it's a nightmare keeping them in sync and carries a fairly high risk for wrong communication.

So mainting a picklist centrally for custim fields which are named the same but used in different areas would take quite some headache away

  • don't know about sharing fields, i assume you mean sharing the pick list values? that does make some sense; many systems support that. also, carrying the custom fields forward is critical!

  • I agree, it would be really useful for customer fields that are captured in opportunities to move across to projects, only if the field name matches. This would save us time entering the same data over and over.

  •  I want to say "I 2nd that" but looks like I'll have to 6th it instead.

A strong cross-record relationship of data would be very helpful. Organizations <---> Contacts, Opportunities custom fields should translate (not even translate really they should just be the same field) to Projects.

Even from Contacts to Projects. I have reports that I want to run off of a set of Projects and i'd like to set a specific linked contact to have their data added  brought into the project report.

plus a whole host of other reasons
