Editing a custom field type

I am trying to edit a field type within a custom field and it is greyed out.   I am in the system administrator section (I have admin rights) and then went into edit custom fields.  I want to change from a numeric to text and it won't allow me to edit at all.  Am I missing something?

  • Hello Kerry, thank you so much for your post!

It's not possible to make that type of modification after you've added a custom field. If you need to change it, you'll need to add a new one of the type you'd like to use.

    I hope this helps!

  • Hi Lholdiman,

This isn't a feature on our current roadmap.

  • Why would Insightly block us from editing the field type on a custom field that we made?  isnt that the purpose of having custom fields so that we as users can edit them?

  • Hi Nora,

I have a custom field set as numeric which now needs to be changed text. From your message it seems I can't change the field type so I would need to create a new field, but is there a way to copy across all data from the original field (for all organisations) into the new field? Otherwise I am going to lose loads of data or going to have duplicate fields next to each other with the same name which is confusing.

    Is this right?

  • Hi David,

You can add your new Custom Field under System Settings > then export the data out including the Custom Field > you'll receive the export via a CSV file which you will need to rename the old Custom Field numeric to the new Custom Field text > and re-import the date.

  • Hi

We are on a monthly base subsc. to test right now. That seems unproductive, I just created custom fields with a drop down list, cross linked the custom field with other sections (contact, project, etc)  ... the only think we need to change is the default value to None. Any other way to do that other then the user having the ability to change the default value ?

Also that drop down does not work in Leads , the field is showing but not drop down to pick from.

It does work in Contacts, in Organization ... how do we fix that ?

    Thank you .

  • Hello MP:

Are you trying to update multiple records at the same time? If so, bulk updating via import is the best option.

With regard to your drop down Lead Custom Field, can you share a screenshot of what you're seeing instead?

    Thanks.

  • Hello Lyla,

Thank for your feedback. Oddly enough today the drop down menu is working perfectly again when creating a new lead! SO that fixed itself! Lol

For the other question i had. I created a custom field with a drop down and when i did that i assigned a default value. I just want to change that to no default value. My understanding is that i need to delete the custom field entirely and redo a new one?  But this is also the same custom field that map across contacts, Lead, Organizations, opportunity, project  .

If i delete that field i will have to do it for all the sections and will I loose the value entered on every contact, organization, lead, project, opportunity  ?

I hope that makes sense what i ma trying to explain!  Thank you for your help!

  • So, jumping on an old conversation. I have to say "Me too" to changing the field type. And frankly my head hurts with the idea of moving data the way you indicate from the "old" field to the "new" field. There shouldn't be a need to create a "new" filed, just let us change the field type. If I had noticed, wouldn't have created it as a number only field in the first place.

  • Hi David,

Sorry to hear that you're frustrated!  Allowing users to update their field types without restriction could ultimately result in lost data, however, so the system was designed in a way that protected your data from that possibility (at the cost of a bit of convenience).

That said, bulk updating your records with imports is actually a very simply process, and if you need help getting through it you can always reach out to us here! :)
