Insightly releases Microsoft Power BI - view charts and graphs from your Insightly data

We are excited to share the news that Advanced Reporting is now even more robust with the recent release of its connectivity with Microsoft Power BI, a suite of business analytics tools to analyze data and share insights.

By using Insightly and Power BI together, you can monitor your business and get answers fast through visually-detailed dashboards that are available across multiple platforms, including mobile devices. Getting connected is a fast process. You can use your Insightly API key to authorize your account. Once the connection has been made, Power BI will automatically create a dashboard, report, and dataset with data from Insightly. See Connecting Power BI to Insightly.

*Please keep in mind that Power BI is a product developed by Microsoft Corp. and that they have extensive help documentation to get you started with Power BI.

  • What if we're not a Microsoft house? We use Google almost exclusively, except for a few specific applications that won't run on Android or Chrome.

Is there a way to get this 'advanced reporting' without using a Microsoft product?

  • Hi Alex:

The Power BI integration can be used by all Insightly users, regardless of Google Apps access. All you need to do is sign up and connect your 2 services together :)

  • I am not able to load Insightly service into the Power BI. I get a "please wait while we load some things" screen that does not go away for hours every time I attempt to do it . I tried different browsers with no luck. Can anyone help?

  • Above is a printscreen of the issue. It has remained like that for the last couple hours despite refreshing the page and trying on alternative desktops and different browsers.

  • Hello everyone, I am a product manager at Insightly for this feature. From what I can see, this appears to be an issue with Power BI services catalog as it seems to be stopping before you even have a chance to enter your Insightly API key to connect to Insightly data. I will let our contacts at Microsoft know of this issue. In the meantime, I've just tested reconnecting to Power BI Insightly content pack using Chrome browser and although I saw that same message for about 30 seconds, eventually it went away allowing me to connect using my Insightly API key in the next step. The data load and refresh of previously connected Insightly instances appear to work just fine. Sorry that you are having trouble, hopefully this resolves quickly.

  • I have gotten Power BI to link to my Insightly account, but when I drill into Power BI's graphical representation of my data, I cannot drill down to the underlying detail.  Shouldn't I be able to get to my underlying records in Insightly by drilling down in the Power BI graphics?

  • Hi Brent, unfortunately, you can't drill into the detail of the record from a graph, chart or a map. You can, however, see all the details of the record (including custom fields and tags) in a report that you can create in Power BI tool or edit one of the existing reports to display all that detailed data. What you won't get to see is links and relationships between records, all other detailed data is there.

  • I second RawTravel's request for integration into Power BI Desktop. Mailchimp, Marketo, Zendesk are just a few of the SaaS providers who have already done this, so it appears "do-able" at least.

About 5 seconds after importing our Insightly data into Power BI, it became obvious that I would have to build out a dateTime table and merge it with Insightly's data (for that I need it to be in Power BI Desktop).

    3rd party tutorial I'm following: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/Power+BI/141037/

Without a dateTime table, there is no way to view data by time and filter it over week, quarter, year etc. This makes simple reports like "Leads this week" or "Opportunities by Quarter" impossible to graph.

Could you please either add integration to Power BI desktop, or even better - add a dateTime field in the Insightly data by default so that customers can jump straight into building time based graphs and dashboards.

    Thanks!
