Automatically adding a pipeline to an opportunity?

Is there a way to when we create a new opportunity that, insightly automatically assigns a pipeline? I cannot find this option, so i am assuming it is not present?

We only have one pipeline for all our opportunities and projects, it would be nice to not have to manually select it every time we set up a new opportunity or project.

  • Hi Grant,

There isn't a way to have a pipeline automatically assigned; however it would only be one additional click when adding your Opportunity to select the Pipeline from the dropdown option.

  • I could definitely see the use for a "Default Pipeline" in the settings though.

  • I also see a huge benefit in being able to automatically add pipelines to both Opportunities and Projects. Nora, your example works nicely when creating a *new* opportunity, but many of our opportunities are converted from leads. When following this flow, we need to convert the lead, then edit the related opportunity, add the pipeline and save.

    So it's actually four clicks.

Plus, if we ever forget to add the pipeline, the opportunity is not visible in our business processes.

So a big up-vote from me for this facility please!

  • are there any new developments here? I've been playing around with Zapier to automate things, but the pipeline stage is one that I'd really like to have control over, or at least have a "default pipeline" as mentioned by Chris above. Thanks.

  • I would like to bump this as well.

Even if we could select the pipeline when converting a lead that alone would be a huge help. But it would be nice to set one of the pipelines as default as users above said.

  • I would like to bump this too.

It is time consuming and inefficient to have to go into each opportunity to assign it a pipeline.

A default pipeline would be great.

  • Bump. We should be able to set a default pipeline. This would save an unnecessary step since we only have a single pipeline, and allow us to make "stages" a required field when creating new opps.

  • If you're on the Professional plan or higher, you could create a workflow automation that does this.

Your default opportunity state is probably Open.  As one example, you can create a new workflow process for opportunity records, where the criteria is Opportunity State = Open.  Then the action could be updating the record with the correct pipeline, and the first pipeline stage.

If you have multiple pipelines, then the criteria could be category (or a dropdown custom field), and each category (or custom field dropdown option) can correspond with the action of the correct pipeline being applied.

  • Thanks Matthew, but that doesn't really solve the core problem for us, which is eliminating unnecessary steps. We almost always create new Opportunities directly (vs. converting leads, for instance), just based on how we do business. That means when a new opportunity is created, our team needs to set the pipeline stage immediately. Often, an Opportunity is opened and immediately starts at a later pipeline stage.

  • When you create a new opportunity, one of the options is to immediately select the pipeline and stage - see screenshot below.  You can make this a required field as well, to make sure reps are filling this in.  With this method, we can't guard for errors as reps are entering this information in - but setting up the workflow automation could solve for that.
