Text Fields Are A Mess

We and others raised this issue a few years ago (when we first started using Insightly) and at the time were told that it was a known issue that would be fixed. Here we are and it's still a ridiculous problem.

Text fields of all types - notes, tasks, comments, additional info on contacts and organizations - can't seem to maintain the most basic of formatting: line breaks.

Enter information into any text field using a list or try not to have massive paragraphs of run-on sentences by using line breaks ("Enter" on your keyboard), then save your work and it all gets mushed together into a single long paragraph!

Once in a while the initial save may not turn it into a big pile of text, but come back to the field to edit it and save again, and BOOM, it turns into a single run-on paragraph anyway.

The amount of time I waste trying to format these text fields in a way that isn't lost, so that I can actually read and use the information, plus the time lost trying to make heads or tails of text that I *thought* got saved properly but was junk when I returned to it,  completely negates any time savings of using the app in the first place.

It's really disappointing that after all this time, such a basic function is still outside the ability of this application.

  • Hi there,

I'm sorry for the frustration this has caused. Copy and Paste does seem to work on the Chrome browser. We do have a thread of comments and workarounds that you can review as well as vote for here.

  • Respectfully, I didn't even mention copy/paste. I'm talking about typing directly into the application. It is crazy that a text field can't even maintain line breaks. I'm not trying for fancy formatting.

The fact that the link you sent me to has people complaining about the same horrible text handling problems from a year ago is telling, and sad.

Why should having the application not screw up what's typed into it be a feature request that requires voting? Especially for something that's been an ongoing problem for so long?

  • I've had success with line breaks using bulk import, if there are line breaks within the excel cell, they are mirrored when I upload.

Also in my Custom Fields, when they are set up as Multiline Text Fields, I can hit enter and there is a line break. And with notes, the initial view shows as one long, non-broken line, but when you click on the note, the line breaks are there.

Where are you having issues with line breaks?

  • Yea, it looks like the issue is between viewing a multi-line text field (like a Note) in a List view (such as the Notes tab on a contact) vs viewing it individually (clicking on the actual Note to view its details).

I guess I could see how removing line breaks in the List View helps you see more info because the data is slightly condensed, but you are already truncating, so it's a bit overkill IMO.  I think the normal functionality in a case like this is to keep the new line formatting and truncate.

  • I share this frustration -- specifically in the case of multi-line text custom fields. Just as BuckS described, you can press 'Enter' to create line breaks when you are typing, but then when you save it, the lines are not separated anymore.

Is there a plan and a timeline for fixing this?
