HELP! Setting up email with Office 365

I'm trying to set it so my email will send through Insightly. Basic stuff, right?

My IT person says that there is no "server name" to add to the Office 365 box (while adding email to Insightly) because it's in the cloud and it changes. What?

So I asked Dan at Insightly who gave me this info:
Hi Lori, All Office 365 users should all use smtp.office365.com in the server area. If that does not work, try to put in https://outlook.office365.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx and see if that works.

Results: The first option gives me an error code "invalid server name".

The second one can't be verified. The error reads, "There was a problem setting up your email. We are unable to authenticate with your email account. Please try deleting and re-adding the account in Email Accounts"
I've tried this twice to no avail. My email pw is accurate.

What now?

THANKS!

  • Hi,

I have the same problem as Gryson:

    smtp.office365.com = invalid server name

https://outlook.office365.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx = There was a problem setting up your email. We are unable to authenticate with your email account. Please try deleting and re-adding the account in Email Accounts"

    What to do?

  • Hi Rune,

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble. There's a couple of things you can try:

    • Can you check if your Office 365 has SMTP enabled? If this is not enabled, Insightly can't connect.
    • Try setting SMTP up on another application such as Thunderbird (this is a free service). If you get the same error messages, the credentials don't match.

  • Hi Nora,

It worked with Thunderbird when the "Encryption method" was put on: STARTTLS.

Where do change this in Insightly?

  • Hi Rune,

Insightly goes though every encryption for standard ports if you have SSL or TLS, so Insightly will find it.

  • I understand - then it is a mystery that I get: "invalid address" when I try to connect (using: smtp.office365.com).

  • Hi Rune,

Would you be able to share a screenshot of the message you're receiving? Is the email address an alias? It needs to be a primary email address.

  • I seem to be having similar problems to this thread.  The second address produced the screen capture below.

How can I verify my account?

  • Hi Zachary,

Thank you for posting in our Community.

You can try adding the email address to Insightly by using the "Other" option.

To add the email address using "Other," please see the directions below:

    1. Go to "User Settings."
    2. "Email Accounts."
    3. "Other."

From there, you can enter your SMTP server address and email credentials. When you enter the credentials, make sure to put your email address in both the "Email Address" and "User Name" field.

    I hope this helps!

  • Hi Alanna:

Your recommendation to go to - user settings, email accounts, other and enter SMPT server credential did not work.

However from -user settings, email accounts, -  i went back to original email account settings and re-entered my password which was blank. As soon as I resubmitted password the email address showed as verified.  Something is wrong with the 365 integration, multiple trouble shooting tips are not yielding results.

  • Hi Zachary,

Thank you for responding to me and for letting me know the account is now showing verified.

Generally, if the Office 365 SMTP set up doesn't work, we advise users to try "Other." However, since your account is now showing verified, can you test it by sending an email out of Insightly? If the email shows as sent, then your SMTP set up should be good to go.

  • Hey Adrian,

If you're running a custom server, you're going to need to work with your server Admin to get the correct information for SMTP setup in Insightly.

If you're running everything directly through Office365, you should be able to use the basic settings from their website.
