Drop down menu says I don't have permission for an action.

I was trying to find a contact that has been in the system for years.  I searched under contact and in the main search field.  Then I clicked on recent items and found his name, clicked on it and is said that I did not have permission to do that action and contact my administrator.  THey say they have not looked at that contact name.
