Categorizing contacts

I have spent too much time trying to figure out whether I need a category or a field or what.  I am a commercial real estate broker and need to categorize my contacts by type e.g. prospect, customer, lawyer, environmentalist, etc.  Sorry but I don't want to spend time becoming a CRM whiz.  Just want to make the basics work

How should I go about doing this?

    Hello,

I'd first find out if those attributes you listed are:

    a. fixed

    b. more than one attribute can apply to a contact

If a and b are true, then create a multi-select custom field.

If a is true and b is false, then create a dropdown custom field.

If a is false and b is true or b is false, then tags may be a better option.

    Thank you,

If your contact type values (i.e. Lawyer, Prospect, Customer, etc) are rarely going to be updated with new values and more than one of those values can apply to a contact like a lawyer who also happens to be your customer, then use a multi-select custom field.

If your contact type values are rarely going to be updated with new values and you only want to select one category for your contact, then use a dropdown custom field.

If your contact type values are going to be updated frequently and more than one value can apply to a contact then use tags.

    Does that help?

    Thank you,
