How do Landing Pages Work?

Landing pages are valuable tools for converting visitors to Prospects and growing a customer base. They are a great way to nurture new customers, educate people about products, and drive conversions.

Landing pages are standalone webpages that Prospects and potential Prospects can "land" on or visit from clicking a link in an email, a web or mobile ad, a social post, or any hyperlink on the web. A landing page is created through the Designer Tool using prefabricated templates or custom templates. Landing pages can automatically measure and track the number of visitors that arrive and where they came from.

Use Cases

Scenario

Application

I want to inform Prospects about a limited time offer.

Create a landing page highlighting an offer and its details to promote across social media, paid ads, or your website. Include a form for Prospects to take advantage of the offer.

I want to advertise a new product.

Create a landing page highlighting the new product features and benefits with a form for Prospects to request more information or a demo.

I need to increase sign up for an event.

Create a landing page advertising the event details and what they can expect from attending. Include a form for event registration.

I want to encourage potential Prospects to sign up for my newsletter.

Create a landing page to describe what potential Prospects can expect by signing up for the newsletter; use the landing page to convey the value that will be delivered. Include a form so potential Prospects can sign up for the newsletter.

Examples

Example 1:

Martha searched for best practices to be a better marketer and came across a link for "The Definitive Guide to Marketing". Interested in downloading the ebook, she clicks on the link and is taken to a landing page that tells her more about the ebook, what she can expect to learn from it, and how to download it. She completes the form on the landing page and the ebook is delivered to her email inbox within seconds.

Now that she has access to this content, Martha might feel that she can trust your business for other educational content and will want to subscribe to notifications about any future media put out by your company.

Example 2:

A publishing company wants to target an audience of chief executives. They create a landing page that invites Prospects to sign up for a webinar hosted by an executive at a major company. After providing an email address on the landing pages signup form, the Prospects will receive an email with the webinar dates and login information, as well as instructions on how to sign up for the publications newsletter.

If the Prospects are impressed by the webinar, they may sign up for the newsletter or subscription to keep up with similar publication events and content.

Best Practices

Determine a Goal

Decide beforehand what the landing page should accomplish.

Every landing page should have a goal and a "call to action" (a task that a visitor should complete). This could be to join a mailing list, download a piece of content, or request a demo or conversation.

Consider the Audience

Be mindful of who the audience is and the message that is being conveyed.

What information does the visitor need to know to complete the "call to action"? If it's to join a mailing list, what can they expect to receive in the future? If it's to download a piece of content, what can they expect to learn from it? Outline what's in it for them. If there are multiple audiences or personas, try creating several different landing pages to attract each with language that would appeal to them; for example, a Sales Manager may join a mailing list for different reasons than a Sales Representative would. Creating templates for landing pages is a great way to accomplish content that is catered to different audiences and personas.

Write Compelling Content

Make the intentions of the landing page clear.

Successful landing pages are built to include thoughtful content that is concise, on brand, and directed towards a specific persona. Include a value driven headline that grabs attention, body text that conveys value and is concise, a clear "call to action", and a footer with contact information in case assistance is necessary.

Stay Above the Fold

Ensure that if a form is included that it is visible above the page fold i.e., the visitor does not have to scroll at all to locate it.

Create a Landing Page

  1. To build a new landing page, navigate to Landing Pages via the objects on the left side of Insightly Marketing. From the landing pages list view, click the New Landing Page button located in the upper right.
    1. On the Setup step, enter the landing page details. The Landing Page Name and Page Title are required fields. Page Description field is not required but it is recommended to fill it out as it may affect the META description tags for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) since the SEO uses Page Title and Page Description.
      • Be sure to disable the Active checkbox if the landing page should not be published at this time. If the Active checkbox is enabled, the landing page will be published immediately upon creation completion.
  2. The Form step can be utilized if a form will be embedded on the landing page. If a form will not be included on the landing page, Don't Embed Form can be selected from the Embedded Form drop-down.
    • If using an existing form handler, form can be selected via dropdown.
NOTE: In order to collect Prospect data from a landing page, an existing form is required to be added. Via the landing page record, the Submissions tab will display a list of form submissions from Prospects.
    • If Create a New Form is selected, the Landing Page Form creation page will load where a new form can be created for the landing page.
  3. The next two steps in the landing page creation process are the Template and Design steps. These steps are where the Designer Tool is utilized for customizing the landing page.
  4. Once the Template and Design steps using the Designer Tool have been completed and Next has been clicked, the landing page will be saved and published (if the Active checkbox was enabled in the Setup step). The details of the landing page can be reviewed and the page URL can be copied and added to emails and/or documents as needed.
    • Finish can be clicked to exit the Designer Tool.

Landing Page Actions

When editing, cloning, or deleting a landing page, these actions can be done via two different routes:

Route 1: Via the list view of landing pages, the three dots menu on the far right of a landing page can be clicked and the applicable function can be chosen from the expanded list.

Route 2: Via the list view of landing pages, a landing page record can be opened. Once opened, the Actions drop-down in the upper right corner can be clicked and the applicable function can be chosen from the expanded list:

Edit a Landing Page

  1. To edit a landing page, navigate to Landing Pages via the objects on the left side of Insightly Marketing.
  2. From the Landing Pages screen, locate the landing page that requires editing.
    1. Click either the three dots menu to the far right of the landing page in the list view or click the Actions button in the upper right of the landing page record. From the available options, select Edit This Landing Page.
      • Each time a landing page is edited and saved, it will be updated for anyone with the link. Saving landing page edits will not automatically send it to Prospects, they will need the URL to access the page.
      • Edits for a form that is on an existing landing page can be made from the forms record or through the landing page creation process with the Designer Tool
      • When updating a form on a landing page, it will need to be removed from the landing page via 'Remove Form Handler' link
      • Then re-add it to the Embedded Form field using an existing form handler option to accurately collect future data.
      • On the Design step, delete the existing form
      • Then drag and drop a new form from the right side content
      • Save Design, click Next and click Finish

Clone a Landing Page

Landing pages that have been created can be reused without compromising the original. This can be done by cloning the landing page.

  1. To clone a landing page, navigate to LandingPages via the objects on the left side of Insightly Marketing.
  2. From the Landing Pages screen, locate the landing page that will be cloned.
    1. Click either the three dots menu to the far right of the landing page in the list view or click the Actions button in the upper right of the landing page record. From the available options, select Clone This Landing Page.
      • When cloning a landing page, the process is the same as creating a new landing page although since the landing page is a clone, it won’t have to be created from scratch and any necessary edits can be made.
      • When editing the clone, if a new template is chosen, it will erase the design that was cloned from the original landing page. If a new template is not necessary, the Template and Design steps of the Designer Tool can be skipped.

Save an Existing Landing Page as a Template

If a landing page has been created and a user wants to be able to reuse the layout for repeat landing pages, a template can be created from the original landing page.

  1. To save an existing landing page as a template, navigate to Landing Pages via the objects on the left side of Insightly Marketing.
  2. From the landing page list view locate the desired landing page. Click the three dots menu on the far right of the landing page’s row or from within a landing page’s record, click the Actions button. From the available options, select Save as Template.
    1. The Add New Landing Page Templatepopup will appear where the landing page template details can be applied.
      1. The Name and Folder of the landing page template will automatically populate with the information from the original Landing Page.
      2. Once Save is clicked, the ability to customize the design of the landing page template as needed will appear via the Designer Tool.
        • The design of the original landing page will transfer over to the newly created template.

Deactivate a Landing Page

Deactivating a landing page preserves the record and allows the landing page to be published at a later date. This is in contrast to deleting a landing page.

  1. To deactivate a landing page, navigate to Landing Pages via the objects on the left side of Insightly Marketing.
  2. From the Landing Pagesscreen, locate the landing page that requires deactivation.
    1. Via the Details tab of the landing page record, the Active checkbox can be disabled to deactivate a landing page. This will unpublish the landing page but will allow the record to stay intact.

Delete a Landing Page

Deleting a landing page will unpublish the page and will also delete the record of the landing page. This is in contrast to deactivating a landing page.

  1. To delete a landing page, navigate to Landing Pages via the objects on the left side of Insightly Marketing.
  2. From the Landing Pagesscreen, locate the landing page that requires deletion.
    1. Click either the three dots menu to the far right of the landing page in the list view or click the Actions button in the upper right of the landing page record. From the available options, select DeleteThis Landing Page.
      • Once a landing page has been deleted, it can be restored from the Recycle Bin. If a landing page was active when it was deleted, it will be republished upon restoration.
