Chrome Sidebar Extension Freezes Gmail

Hello -

The sidebar extension still seems to cause problems in gmail (google apps).  Randomly it will cause gmail to stop responding to any clicks, usually when trying to open an email.  If I disabled the insightly extension, problem goes away immediately.  Reenable, it's back within no time.

Hard to believe there hasn't been an update to this extension in over a year?

Seems like there have been other sort-of related threads, but no resolutions, and they're all very old so reposting to see if there are any updates or solutions to be found.

  • Hi David,

Do you have any other Chrome extensions installed?  It's possible that an additional extension is preventing your Sidebar extension from working properly.  You can check this by going to chrome://extensions.

If you could let me know what other extensions you have installed, I should be able to say which one (if any) is causing the issue.

Other installed extensions, all seem pretty normal:

Application Launcher for Drive (by Google)
    Chrome RDP
    Disable HTML5 Autoplay
    Google Docs Offline
    Google Hangouts
    Hootsuite Hootlet
    LastPass: Free Password Manager
    Password Alert
    Secure Shell
    Send from Gmail (by Google)

Other people in our organization had similar problems, but perhaps they also had some similar extensions.

  • Hi David,

Could you try disabling Hootsuite and see if your performance improves?  That's the only one I can see that may have some interaction with your Insightly Sidebar.

If that doesn't work, try removing and readding the Sidebar entirely.  That should correct most issues related to the Sidebar itself.

I have disabled the hootsuite extension and for the moment insightly sidebar seems to be functioning.  Will repost if it stops.

I suppose I'll just have to decide whether hootsuite or insightly is more useful at any given time!

    Thanks for the help.

  • I am evaluating Insightly for my company, just signed up for the trial.  Installed the sidebar.  It seemed to keep causing gmail to crash and now it's to the point that I can't even open an email.  When I click to open an email it doesn't open and everything freezes (including the sidebar extension).

I have disabled all other extensions and the problem persists.

    I've also tired...

Removing the sidebar extension and adding it again

    Restarting my computer

    Updating Chrome

    Uninstalling Chrome and re-installing.

Still the problem persists.  It's a real bummer other than that I'm really excited about Insightly and how it integrates (or is supposed to integrate) with gmail.

Hoping you can tell me how to fix the issue (if there is anything I can do on my end).

    Thanks in advance.

Bad news, it stopped working again multiple times today.  Same issue: randomly clicking on a mail to open it freezes the whole thing. No hootsuite extension.

  • The Insightly sidebar for chrome has been crashing for me in the past two weeks also. Have disabled all plugins/extensions and gmail for business is fine. I turn on only Insightly sidebar and crash/freeze occurs immediately. Symptoms of freeze/crash makes UI unresponsive. Occurs without any obvious user input. Am on the latest version of Chrome; Version 60.0.3112.90 (Official Build) (64-bit).

This is currently a game-breaker based on our current internal processes for how, and why, we use Insightly.

If you could give a more detailed outline on when/if an update is likely that would be great - or alternatively suggest an alternative that is currently working without issue?

  • Thank you for those details Ben, I'm going to add this to the information provided to our development team. Since you've commented here you'll also be notified with any updates when available.

As an alternative you can use your Insightly email address to save copies of your emails in your Insightly account. This article shows you how to use this feature - Using your Insightly mailbox address to save emails.

  • I am having exactly the same problem since week now. Gmail freeze constantly, If I disable sidebar it works fine.

I use gmail and Sidebar to link my incoming/outgoing email to insightly to client record.

  • Lyla, Al my setting are as per your suggest "Using your Insightly mailbox address to save emails"

In my gmail app, as soon as I enable Sidebar, Gmail app freezes.

I have tried to use Insightly gmail gudget to link my emails to Insightly, when I click on Save Email, it seems to be going the job, but that email or contact does appear in Insightly.

  • Hello, Insightly Team--

I noticed there haven't been any updates regarding this issue.  This lack of the sidebar/extension is causing up some issues...can anyone get an update for us?

  • Hi Lyla,

confirming an experience of the guys above. Gmail started freezing about 2-3 weeks ago and the only working solution is to disable insightly sidebar. Any ideas of how long it may take to fix it? I like insightly a lot, but without the connection to Gmail an excel sheet can do the same work...

Thanks in advance for your efforts

    Marian

  • Still No progress on this issue? 1 month passed already.

  • So another confirmation. After disabling Insightly sidebar not a single problem occured in Chrome for 2 weeks. Then I tried to turn on the sidebar again and after Chrome restarted and sidebar was uploaded Chrome freezed immediately after first 3 clicks in Gmail.

After turning the sidebar off again and restarting Chrome everything works fine.

I assume confirmed that it´s a problem of Insightly sidebar. Is there any solution in sight or shall we try to look for another GSuite CRM?

    Thanks

    Marian

  • Come gmail guys, it has been too long to for you to find solution to this freezing issue. Can't believe it it could be that difficult.

Nicely working system, completely messed up now. Slow response from Google, not even updating on what is happening, probably you guys don't care.

  • Seems the issue has been fixed, I have enable Sidebar for last few days and it is working fine. I would have expected Google should have informed that issue has been fixed.

Thank you anyway for fixing the problem.

  • I am having the same issues. Insighly sidebar freezes Gmail every time. We just signed up for Insightly, and the sidebar was a HUGE factor for us to do that. Having to manually add emails via the alternative method is not what we signed up for. Please advise as to what has been done to fix this issue, as it's a deal breaker for our team. Thank you.

  • We are having the same problem. Extremely frustrating. We've tested all extensions multiple times and it appears to be the Insightly sidebar causing the problems. Please advise if there are any updates to this - close to one year later. I'd love to know if there are others still having the same trouble or if there is a workaround. Thanks.

  • Me too -- exactly -- (#102).  I disabled the Insightly sidebar and it seems to have solved the problem... but now I don't have the sidebar. I'm going to try uninstalling it and reinstalling it.

  • I am having the same problem. Thought it was my network until I found this thread (and gmail threads) and disabled Insightly extension.  Gmail works fine once insightly extension turned off.

Gmail is more important than insightly - so at the moment i'm w/o insightly until this gets fixed

  • Hello Holly, Rebecca, & Rikki,

I apologize for experiencing this issue with the Insightly Sidebar for Gmail.

As a company, it has been decided to focus all development efforts on our Insightly Gmail add-on as this uses Gmail's latest version of their API. The previous API version will be discontinued eventually. Because of this, we are unable to review the issues with the Sidebar in more detail with our engineering team.

You still have options to save your emails!

We recommend installing the new Insightly Add-on for Gmail. You can find an overview of the Add-on here: The Insightly Add-on for Gmail (beta). There is always the option to use your Insightly mailbox address to save emails too.

Also to help the Insightly Add-On run properly you'll need to uninstall the Insightly Add-On. Please follow the steps below on how to uninstall the Insightly Sidebar for Gmail:

    1. Remove the Insightly Sidebar by opening a Chrome window > three-dot icon > Settings > three dot icon menu > Extensions
    2. Locate Insightly and click to "Remove"

    I hope that helps!

  • Thanks, disabling the "Insightly Sidebar" extension and installing the "Insightly Add-on for Gmail" finally worked for me.

That #102 error has been driving me NUTS in Gmail and finally tracked down the cause.
