  • Hi Brenda!

So glad you all are bringing back the feature request voting. I was very disappointed when that went away.

I still love using Insightly as a science fiction writer to manage my writing projects from the idea stage through the submission/publishing process. I continue to be impressed with your offerings. Keep up the great work!

  • Hi Brenda! I just wanted to say that I love Insightly and the community. Can you correct "Manger" under your title. I don't think you work at a farm.

  • Welcome, Edenilson. Thank you for your encouraging words and for catching that typo. Although I have fleeting thoughts about raising chickens that's about as far my farming dreams go.

  • Thanks! I had a couple suggestions in the old system and voted on several. I'll be sure to see what people have already submitted and make my contribution there. I'm a software developer in my day job, so I'm always thinking about how applications can serve a broader array of user needs.

On the farming topic, a year ago I moved to a house on an acre lot in an Inland Southern California community with a "right to farm." I just planted 10 fruit trees last week (citrus & avocado). I know several people who have chickens in cities where they allow that, but I'd rather clean up after plants than animals. :)

  • Ralph, I'm excited to hear you participated in Insightly's past community and look forward to having your contributions here. btw: Congratulations on your new(ish) place in Southern California. I grew up with orchards all around me and really miss those days. btw: The idea of being able to walk outside and pick an avocado from your own tree sounds pretty perfect to me. :)

  • HI Brenda - really looking forward to using your skills!

I have a question about tags - is it possible to set up a contact so I can categorise by industry e.g. Retail, Accountant.

And then filter all contacts so only the Accountants show up?

  • Hi Brenda

I run a Canadian High Tech Staffing company (Messa.com) back-boned by Insightly. We love it. My question has to do with the new functions and pricing. I'd like to try the LEAD function BUT we bought a full year package for 6 people. we have dropped 3 out of the system (even though they are paid for for the year). How will that work (to pay properly) if I want to adjust my plan. [Price per user will go up BUT i have a significant credit to be applied]

  • Welcome, Rebecca! It's definitely possible to categorize your contacts with tags and filter by them and tags are super easy to use. Here's our Using Tags FAQ on and our Working with tags video. One nice things about tags is that you can also use bulk edit with them - which could come handy if you have a lot of accountants to tag. When you tagged your contact's industry, you'll "filter" them by clicking Contacts and selecting "accountant" under the Contact Tags section to the right.

You can also categorize contacts using the custom fields feature. I know customers in the health care industry use custom fields to add birth year. To filter contacts who are accountants by your custom filter you would use Filter (at top) and select Custom Filter >> Create New Filter >> Custom Fields Industry + contains + Accountant. The upside of custom fields is you could create your custom field as a drop down and reduce the margin of error of typing. The downside is not bulk edit. Here's more on Setting up Custom Filters and our Creating and Using Filters video.

I hope this leaves you with some options! Feel free to post another question to our Questions and Answers section. I know our community would love to share how they are categorizing their contacts. Thanks!

  • @Rebecca, I use tags for contacts in a similar way, identifying individuals as literary agents, editors, fellow writers, beta readers, or just followers. I like to attach these contacts to a project (i.e., I enter my stories into projects to track their progress from idea to publication). For example, if a fellow writer is critiquing my story, I will attach them to that project.

I also use tags with Organizations in a very similar way. I added custom fields to store primary contact info in the Org record. You can link Contacts to Orgs and indicate their role (i.e., the contact is an Employee of the Organization), but it's important to remember that Relationships don't work for linking Orgs to contacts (only Contacts to Contacts or Orgs to Orgs).

The Org records are a great feature for me ( I've blogged about it), but for some people they might add an unnecessary layer of complexity, just an extra step to perform. I'm curious if you'll just use Contacts or if you find the Org records useful, too.

  • Hi Brenda, I am an International Realtor® & Real Estate Manager operating in the Netherlands & USA. I use Insightly for CRM apart from proprietary CRM software modules as part of two seperate ERP systems in our other lines of businesses (brokerage and property management). It is quite a lot of work to set up all processes (pipelines and activity sets for each activity),but Insightly nicely integrates with Google (mail, calender, drive) and MS Office 365, and many other products (Quickbooks, Evernote, Mailchimp and such). API can be used so that leads / prospects are directly recorded into Insightly through the website form. The integrations, delegating (and monitoring) tasks to team members are a big plus for me. I find Insightly inspiring.

  • @Brenda. Will communities be organized according to industry/sector or features/uses of Insightly?

  • Hi Erik,

Thanks for your community question. :) I will most likely be organizing community topics by feature now that the general areas (Product, Q&A) have so many posts in them. However, I want to also provide areas where users in similar business sectors can meet one another so I do hope to create industry user groups in the near future!
