Custom field - drop down - multiple answer

I would like the option to create a drop down custom field that allows multiple answers.  For instance,  if a contact does work in multiple jurisdictions,  I would like to have a drop down listing the jurisdictions and we can select any number of them.

Hello everyone, last week we released completely revamped Insightly System Settings. New design allows administrators add powerful customization to their page layouts, configure new types of custom fields and much more.

Please head over to this article or watch this overview video to learn about all the new ways you can customize Insightly.

And...the wait is over: custom drop-down fields now support multi-select!

  • This is a key missing option for custom fields. If I offer five services, I would like to be able to check off three out of the five for a contact. This has been a source of frustration for several of my clients who are now using Insightly.

  • I would also like to have a multi-check box. i.e. be able to specify many options in a list but then allow the user to "select all that apply". This should also allow for "Other (specify)" and allow a text box for the user to enter text if that check box is ticked. It would also be useful to lay out the checkboxes in a choice of number of columns (say 2 columns or 3 columns). At the moment custom fields can only be laid out one after another etc. Takes up a bit too much space on a screen. Would be also good to add a heading for a group of check boxes so that you could say "Which of the following are true (select all that apply)".

  • We'd also urgently need a possibility to select MULTIPLE options for custom fields on contacts. Could be a dropdown, list pick or similar. We need to create customer profiles - super important to our business.

  • Almost every request for a custom field I receive from our sales team would require multiple selections to work.

For example, we want to keep track of the languages spoken by our contacts, many of whom are bilingual or trilingual. It's not sufficient to just add a text box and list the languages, because we also need to be able to filter contacts according to language, so we can plan our communication and promo activities around that criterion.

    Any news?

  • Good Morning Everyone,

I totally understand your need to have a multi-check drop down.  It would definitely be helpful however, as with all of you, I share that need.  to be able to check off a number of products that are purchased when we create a project.  In order to to do this, I actually created check boxes.  You will need to create one for each item, but it allows for checking multiple items on a given record.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Sincerely

    Rachel

  • I recognize that adding another field type to a database is not a trivial task - it is far harder than many might recognize.  However, the cynic in me wonders if Insightly Business Profit goals aren't driving this "no place on the roadmap" decision.  I have been forced to upgrade our account twice because I needed more custom fields (from 25, to 50, and now 100). If I can have a single custom field with a drop down with a multiple-check option than I don't have to waste valuable (and expensive) custom fields.

As an example, we are a nonprofit and our clients are Veterans.  We want to know what are the wars in which our clients have served.  Instead of a single drop down which would let the counselors just click multiple options, I have to use six custom fields one for each war from WWII to OEF/OIF.

    Just an observation.

  • I vote for this as well.  I notice that other CRM's make this available and this would be a HUGE help to me and my team.  Otherwise, we'll have to move to a CRM that can accommodate.

    Thanks!!

  • I currently use Zoho CRM, where this is a feature that they offer.  I would love to switch to Insightly, but I need this to be a feature.  Please add to priorities...thank you!

  • Highly important to have a multi-choice drop-down list - what are possible work-arounds? I am thinking to 'mis-use' the organisation tags to compensate this lacking feature. Are there any better work-arounds out there?!

    Thanks!!

  • Insightly, I think you need to understand that when you say things like " the extreme complexity of making multiple selection dropdowns" you are talking to a lot of people that know how to code and that answer does not fly.   This could be done on a lunch break.  These kinds of features are extremely important and are available in the most basic of CRM's across the world.

  • Great feedback and examples. We recently added new features to Custom Fields per requests from our Community; but  I definitely see the need for this! I have voted on it as well. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Any ideas when this multi-option dropdown will be in development? It is hugely important for us and at present we have to add a Yes/No field for each Option. Hugely frustrating for my team.

  • Hi - I am the original poster on this topic.  I think there might be a partial work-around.  I have found that when i enter multiple answers/options in a custom field it SEEMS Insightly will report on all/each of them.  The problem is that i have to make sure to type the options exactly each time, or it will interpret the data separately.  And, of course, there is the issue of having to type each option separately.  For example, if i create a custom field called "works in the following areas" and then fill it in with: "Alberta, BC, Sask, MB" it seems at though each 'area' is counted separately when i do a report (for eg, "Pull all companies that work in Alberta").  I am still testing this - but would like a confirmation from Insightly Team on this.  Perhaps there are other best practices on how to use the custom fields creatively?

  • A good developer should be able to implement this additional category type in a couple of hours and it will provide such a giant boon to so many users.

  • I am frankly disappointed by the lack of action on these feature requests in nearly a year's time. "It's not in our roadmap" is not the answer any of the multiple users here are looking for.

My company wishes to continue using Insightly, and we particularly need the "drop down" feature mentioned multiple times in this thread already. Your competitors are offering this simple option and I hope the Insightly team recognizes that this thread is only the vocal customers that are requesting this feature, many others are still waiting in silence.

  • I saw another thread from June 2015 that was discussing the use of drop-down menus. Jeff, an Insightly user, created a working drop-down menu code snippet. I was able to customize this in Atom and custom fields worked fine.

The thread has been quiet for nearly a year, but I have asked where the information selected in the drop-down goes once the form has been submitted to Insightly. I don't expect an answer, but perhaps bringing it up here may help shed some light.

The working code can be found here (http://jsbin.com/pezoqokowa/1/edit?html,output).

  • Hi Karl,

Our actual project/product roadmap is not available; however you can review our blog for updates and product releases.

  • This is my biggest bug bear of insightly. I have used several other CRM's and they have all had an option to multi-select. Paulette, I think you're right, this is how they make more money out of their customers. I understand that every company has to upsell, but if insightly's customers can get this included in their package on other CRM's, you'd really think they'd look into this.

  • Hi Insightly team,

this feature is essential. Sorry to say, but i can not see any progress in Insightly.
I hightly recommend to bring the feature request list into the web and let the people vote for. You will see that more and more clients will use this CRM.

  • I don't understand it either ... for us this is such a crucial feature and in the end was the main reason, why we chose another CRM instead of Insightly. It is a knock-out criteria, and as this tread shows not just for us.

  • Damian, James and Attilla, please advise on alternative solutions for CRM.

I have proposed multiple requests and seen ZERO of them considered in nearly two years.

Insightly is too close to the vest with their "roadmap."  They are predictably unresponsive (at least in the form of action vs. talk) to any requests I've followed.

This specific request for a drop-down field with multiple-answers seems to me to be a core functionality issue.  I had this in Act! by Sage in the 15 years ago!

Insightly's customer service has not impressed.  I feel sorry for the employees who are forced to respond with their nothing answers. It must be embarrassing for them to avoid helping customers get what they want for over a year.  This is a fast-moving world where products (especially software as a service) evolve quickly and often.  If Insightly doesn't get it's stuff in order, they will lose employees as well as customers.

How do I export my Insightly data to ready it for import into another CRM?

  • I'd just like to add my name to the list of frustrated users. We have several requirements for a multi-response enabled field, but can't afford to keep upgrading our plan to get the additional custom fields we would require to do this with the present system. It is obviously a widespread need for users of this CRM and has been requested continuously for over a year now. Would be great to know when this might appear on a "road map' of developments, or maybe we can get some information on what decisions are based on when it comes to improvements, is it customer driven?

  • I also vote for adding this feature that has been overlooked since this thread was started.  I am in the evaluation phase of this product and it is disappointing to see a common field type is not available.

  • This would be a huge feature for us as well.     Not only do I use Insightly, I moved my sister's company on to it as well.   The need for a multi Pick list for both of our companies has now forced me to start looking at other CRMs.  Currently I am looking at Contactually as one of the options.

I have used and loved Salesforce in the past.  They do allow this feature.

  • Is there any update to this? It is very frustrating that I'm having to use Tags as a workaround here over a custom field for the scenario I'm doing. The down side to this is there is no real easy way to handle default value for a new opportunity and means I have to have naming standards for my tags for each "custom tag" grouping.

  • Hi JaniceK:

This is still something that we would still like to add to the the Custom Field tools but this is not on our current road map. That is not to say it will never happen, we just have other things to focus on at this point.

We do appreciate the support and additional feedback on this as it does help with adding and prioritizing which features should be developed next. Please keep the idea coming :)

  • Hi Jonathan. We appreciate your added thoughts. As Lyla mentioned, this unfortunately doesn't have a spot on the immediate roadmap. However, your votes and feedback are important in helping decide what is to be considered, so we'll let you know if something changes. Thanks!
