Convert Contacts to Lead

Love that Leads have been added to Insightly. Normally this would not be a good or useful idea, but since we have had to make up our own lead tracking with contacts we now need (perhaps short term) the ability to simple move a contact (with notes, tasks, and events) to Leads.

Actually I can think on one reason for this feature.. If you accidently create or import a contact(s) that should have been a lead.

  • Hi joe,

The ability to convert a contact into a lead will be coming! Our CEO and founder, Anthony Smith, recently announced this on another customer post, " Leads before the Lead Management Feature". If you follow that post, we'll notify you when we post an update. Thanks!

  • Yes, please add. Just activated the Leads option, and was searching for a way to add an existing contact into a lead. Thanks!

  • Unfortunately, after much consideration we will not be able to add this feature. You can read Anthony's explanation here.

    I apologize for the inconvenience.

  • Wrong answer. I understand that Contacts may have all sorts of database connections that would be severed. However, all the Contacts we want to convert to Leads would not have any connections yet. Just create a pop up window with a warning that all connections will be severed and you have a simple fix. I really do not understand what the issue is here. You have a major user need that is causing a loss of subscribers and you refuse to budge?

  • Unbelievable. Are you saying that the only workaround is that we should manually delating contacts and organization a creating the corresponding lead?

Loosing all the mail, notes and events associated to the contact?

  • My understanding is that a contact list should include all contacts as people move around in different positions.  I have hundreds of contact and have had difficulty trying to manage who were current leads.  I would expect to be able to click something and a contact would show up in my leads.  When disqualified they would be taken out of the leads, but would remain a contact.  Also all the data associated with a lead I would assume should be kept in in the contact data.

  • Brett thanks for such comment. That's exactly the same workflow I need. A contact can move around in organizations and change position but from time to time may become a lead for a new campaign.

So if the campaign is successful the lead will generate a new opportunity otherwise the lead is disquified and terminated while the contact will remain

  • I think I have a workaround.  We created a custom field under "contacts" called "lead" with options like "not a lead", "active lead", "closed lead"...  You can ignore the lead screen altogether this way.

The cool thing is that you can filter contacts on custom fields, so if you need to find all of your active leads, you can, and since contacts can be linked to opportunities, you can track that way as well.

    Not perfect, but functional.

  • Hi everyone:

Great news - as part of our CEO's (Anthony) personal commitment to this community, Contact to Lead has been added as a feature!

  • Why does this seem backwards according to how it was stated I import my contacts? In all I read and watched and communicated with you guys, it seemed that the best way to import was to import all contacts as leads. Even though I thought it was backwards, I guess I'm missing why people are suggesting the conversion of contacts to leads, when imports began as leads?

  • Hi Tom:

This thread is a little older and the Leads function was added to Insightly in the first half of last year. Since Leads didn't exist as an option so most users added what was considered to be a Lead as a Contact.

We've since added the function to convert a Contact to a Lead so that it won't be necessary to re-enter information :)
