Coming soon: The Insightly Sidebar

The Insightly Sidebar is Insightly’s newest Gmail integration that is currently in closed beta (production release is coming soon!).

This Chrome browser extension allows you to quickly and easily save important emails or get a customer’s information without having to switch a tab in your browser. Once you add the Insightly Sidebar Extension to your Chrome browser and log in to your Insightly account, all the rich information about your contacts, leads, opportunities, projects, and other Insightly records will be available right in your Gmail window, saving you time and effort. Insightly Sidebar could be used by any Gmail user in the Chrome browser in conjunction with any Insightly plan and does not require a Google Apps account.

You can read more about what you can do with the help of the Sidebar here: https://docs.google.com/a/insight.ly/document/d/1v1ytTXbEO_4tWXHr3FRcd36rNJn1pZjG0VFUBobm7BY/edit?usp=sharing

  • So I can see some of the overdue tasks but not all that are overdue + I can't see who the task relates to when it is opened in the side bar. What next Insightly introduces the chocolate fire guard?

  • @Trevor...one suspects you might find fault with a newly released chocolate fire guard (okay, I give...what IS a chocolate fire guard anyway?). Seriously, the Sidebar was just released. Like EVERY new release, there will be bugs. They will get better. It's going to be okay.

  • Sorry to be flippant but it is very irritating as this happened to email notifications at first making them worse than useless.  Should the contact that the task is for be the prim part of the data that is shown? I haven't seen any movement on the 24 hr clock upgrade yet? Is anyone listening to the users?

  • Jerry, Insightly releases a lot of things that seem to have not been 100% thought through to solve our needs or are just not 100% ready to actually be released. And the features that are missing or bugs that are found don't ever seem to be addressed. I totally understand Jerry's frustration.

  • Greetings from US west coast. Wow, it is great to wake up to so many suggestions and comments after announcing a new feature.

@David: regarding wysiwyg in the description field, I have not heard of problems with it, and can not reproduce but will definitely investigate. Good suggestion on help tips and visual queues to better assist users with understanding the relationship between the selected contact and related items.

@Sean: you can view contact (or any Insightly record) independent of a selected email via search. Request to add notes is not something that we've gotten requests on, but will consider. It makes sense to me, as I use Notes a lot myself and it would definitely save time.

@Trevor: we will look into overdue tasks today to see if there is an issue, but you should be able to see all of your overdue tasks. Fair point on displaying linked contacts for a task - we need to add this.

  • Jerry I'm afraid I have to agree with Jeff. Is anyone working in the engine room to solve existing issues or are they all on the bridge plotting where to go next.

The problem with not listening to users and not solving the known issues is that they cause the user to "work around" the problem.  Eventually the work around is find another CMS.

  • Thanks Maria. My issue was that I saw there is a wysiwyg on the description box for the "Tasks" tab, but I was also expecting the same on the "Projects" tab, since sometimes that is where I am pasting a proposal from an email and want to keep headers, sub headers and bold text intact. Make sense? I guess any panel that features a description box should have a consistent one?

I am sure all bugs and tweaks will get ironed out. Helps when people want the same things though to make these things more urgent.

Off topic but still think you should be able to easily create a lead from a previous contact. That can't be too difficult a feature to roll out and I have seen a lot of people begging for that feature.

  • Maria, when working in my office with 4 screens it isn't a problem as I can keep Insightly on one screen and work off the others. When away from the office the side bar Insightly would be good on my laptop if I could see who the task is pertaining to.

  • Loving the Side Bar, not as any replacement, but as a different view.

I take Trevor's point - any time you view a task its only meaningful if you can see its related items (contact/opportunity).

    Looking forward to further improvement/development

  • I have been using the sidebar for a couple of weeks now and have the following ideas/thoughts...

    - Gmail Sidebar - Would be good if you could assign a task to a project. ( believe this is being worked on for the next update?)

    - Gmail sidebar - rather than or in addition to the arrow button at the bottom which hides the widget, since we click the Insightly logo to open it I naturally keep clicking it to close it however it doesn't.

    - Gmail sidebar - When I copy a line or two of text from an email into the description boxes for tasks or projects it strips the formatting. It would be great if you could keep that.

    - Gmail Sidebar Widget - Has the team at Insightly tested Streak? What I love about the streak Chrome add on is that it gives you snooze and send later emails from the single email view or the all emails view. I use this in collaboration with Insightly but for the 2 functions it would be great if Insightly considered adding that functionality.

  • Hello everyone, just a quick update to let you know that we've released an update to the Sidebar addressing some of your post-release feedback:

     - Added a welcome experience with a short video tutorial for our new users
     - Addressed several usability issues, scrolling, display, field validation
     - Now you can hover on a lead to see related items: activities, emails
     - Improved opportunity/project state editing (added reason)
     - Removed ability to change a pipeline stage for a project or opportunity. We plan to add this functionality back once we can correctly support activity sets which were not being triggered previously.
     - Fixed Google Apps login clash with Boomerang

Several of you have asked for ability to add/manage links for Tasks (in order to assign a task to a project) and other types of records. This change is next in priority for when we ship our next update (sorry, no concrete timelines).

    Thanks!
